Future Systems

The underwater environment remains one of the most demanding frontiers for engineering. Pressure, limited visibility, restricted communications, energy constraints and the difficulty of operating equipment beneath the surface create problems that cannot always be solved by adapting technologies developed for use on land.

At the same time, advances in electronics, energy storage, sensing, materials and automation are creating new possibilities.

INDIC’s future underwater systems program is about exploring where these technologies can take underwater capability next. Building future underwater capability requires more than importing finished products. It requires domestic knowledge of the technologies, engineering disciplines and manufacturing processes that make those systems possible.

India’s expanding defence technology and indigenous manufacturing ecosystem provides an opportunity for specialised companies to develop such expertise progressively.

For underwater systems in particular, long-term capability depends on sustained engineering development, testing, user feedback and the ability to translate emerging technologies into dependable equipment.
